As the monsoon season approaches, Dhaka’s two city corporations have identified 141 locations vulnerable to waterlogging. Of these, 108 are in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 33 in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Efforts are underway to mitigate the risks associated with these areas.
Urban planners emphasize the importance of restoring canal connectivity, improving maintenance, and implementing an integrated master plan to address the city’s drainage issues. Mohammad Fazle Reza Sumon, former president of the Bangladesh Institute of Planners, highlighted the need for proper connectivity between secondary and tertiary drainage channels and the main outfalls to ensure effective water flow.
In addition to these measures, innovative solutions are being explored. A recent study proposed an Internet of Things (IoT) based water-logging detection system for Dhaka. This system would continuously monitor real-time water levels, water flow, and gas levels inside drainage pipes, providing timely alerts to maintenance offices in case of emergencies.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the city’s efforts and to report any drainage issues to the relevant authorities to ensure a coordinated response during the monsoon season.
